How Often Should You Clean Your Carpet (and Upholstery)?
Quick answer: For most homes, have carpet professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months. Homes with kids or a pet usually need it every 6 to 12 months, and homes with several pets or heavy traffic every 3 to 6 months, at least in the busy areas. Upholstery usually needs it every 12 to 24 months, or every 6 to 12 months for a sofa that’s used daily or shared with pets. Vacuum carpet at least once a week, and twice a week in high-traffic areas.
How often, by household
| Your home | Carpet | Upholstery |
|---|---|---|
| Adults only, light use | Every 12–18 months | Every 18–24 months |
| Kids or one pet | Every 6–12 months | Every 12 months |
| Several pets or heavy traffic | Every 3–6 months (traffic areas) | Every 6–12 months |
| Rental move-out or sale | Before you list or hand back keys | As needed |
Many carpet warranties also require professional cleaning at set intervals, so check yours.
Signs it’s time now (whatever the calendar says)
- Gray traffic lanes in hallways, on stairs, or in front of the couch
- Spots that come back after you clean them
- Odors that return after you vacuum
- Matted or flattened pile that doesn’t spring back
- Sofa arms and headrests that look darker than the rest
Why vacuuming isn’t enough
Vacuuming removes loose dirt from the top of the carpet. It doesn’t remove oily soil, sticky spills or residue stuck to the fibers, and that’s what builds into traffic lanes and gray spots. Professional hot-water extraction pre-treats the soil, rinses it out and extracts it, which vacuuming can’t do. Keep vacuuming weekly, because it’s still the best way to slow wear between cleanings.
What about upholstery?
Fabric sofas and chairs collect body oils, food and pet hair where people sit and rest their arms. Check the cleaning code under the cushions first (W, S, W/S or X), because it decides how the fabric can be cleaned. We pick the method to match the code. See upholstery cleaning, or our blood stain guide for spills.
Between cleanings
- Take shoes off at the door, and use mats at entrances.
- Blot spills right away with cold water. Don’t rub.
- Rotate furniture and rugs now and then so wear evens out.

Questions people ask
Can you clean carpet too often?
Not with proper hot-water extraction and good drying. The bigger risk is waiting too long, because packed-in grit wears fibers down faster.
How long does carpet take to dry?
Typically 4 to 8 hours, depending on humidity, airflow and the indoor temperature.
Is it worth cleaning carpet before moving out?
Usually yes. It helps with deposit inspections and makes the home show better.
Do I need to move furniture?
Move small items. We can work around large pieces. See Getting Ready for Our Visit.
